Potty training is a big step in a toddler's life and you can make it a fun and pleasant one when you use tips for potty training that really work. You don't want to start this process to soon so you first need to make sure your child is prepared. The average age for potty training is two and a half, but all toddlers are prepared at different ages so you may be able to start earlier or you may have to wait a little longer. It will all depend on the individual child. To know if your child is prepared you need to start looking for indications.

Being uncomfortable when they are wet is a good sign they are prepared to potty train. It shows that they understand this is not a normal feeling and they don't like it. If your child can put on his or her own shorts or shirt, then this means they have the skill needed for potty training. When they have an interest in the bathroom or wearing training pants they are showing indications they are prepared to begin the process of potty training. At this time they should also be able to stay dry for two or more hours at a time, indicating they are beginning to have a little control over their body functions.

Remember that the simpler you make it for your child the easier it will be for them to train. For instance, the least amount of clothing they have to deal with the faster they can get to the potty. This is important because a child usually only has a few seconds from the time they realize they have to use the bathroom to the time they are actually going. This is why potty training in warm weather is preferred. Make the potty as convenient as you can for your child and allow them to wear clothing in which they can feel wet if they go in their clothes. This encourages them to use the potty because they don't like this wet feeling.

Never try to rush the process of potty training or it may end up taking even longer because toddlers will not respond well to pressure. This is why you need to pick a time that is convenient for you and one in which you will be available to be consistent with the training. You cannot stop and start the process or you will have to start from the very beginning each time. Plus this will confuse and aggravate the child. Don't compare children because each one learns at their own speed depending on their growth pattern. Yelling and punishing a child for accidents only causes more of them to occur so avoid this at all cost. Make this an enjoyable learning experience and praise your child for his or her efforts.
