The wedding ceremony is the most important part of the wedding and the Bride and Groom are the center of attention and we all feel joy for them. But the wedding reception is important, too, because that's where we all have fun.

From Grandparents to infants the guests will present many joyful and sometimes funny moments to capture forever which the Bride and Groom (and their guests) will enjoy in the years to come. One of the best photographs of my daughters wedding was of her Grandmother trying to do the twist with her ten year old Grandson.

While the ceremony is definitely the most important part of a wedding to capture on film, the reception is important also. You will need to take wedding reception pictures if you want to capture lasting memories of the event. Most couples do employ a professional photographer, but they may hire them for a limited number of photos such as the traditional posed portraits of the couple and the wedding party. Professional photography can get expensive, which is why many couples rely on friends and family to take all the candid shots of the reception.

It is important to be prepared before the big day. Get to know your camera by studying all its features and capabilities. Practice taking various types of photos. If you don't have a camera that you feel is good enough for the wedding, you may want to buy or rent one to use. Look for a camera that features at least 6 megapixels and a good level of optical zoom for the best results. Digital cameras are preferable to film cameras because you can see the shot right after you take it. This way you will know whether or not you need to take another shot. Digital cameras make it easy to get great pictures because you get to review them immediately.

If your camera has an automatic flash you should definitely use it. This feature is great because the camera automatically knows whether or not a flash is required. If you find that your pictures look washed out or too bright try turning the flash off and see if that makes a difference. Many digital cameras have modes that can be used in certain settings. Examples of modes might be outdoor, portrait, landscape, black and white, and many more. These modes adjust the camera to the optimum settings for the conditions you're in or the photos you want to take.

Another aspect of taking fantastic wedding reception pictures is capturing candid moments. The first dance as husband and wife, the cutting of the cake, the bride with her father -- these are all moments that should be snapped. Look for humorous moments as well, because these can also be great opportunities for picture taking. Take plenty of pictures, and when you get home you can load them onto your computer and do photo editing. There are lots of software programs that allow you to crop, zoom, remove red eye, apply special effects and more. These programs can help you take a mediocre wedding photo and make it incredible!

With digital camera and cell-phones that can take pictures there is no excuse for not taking hundreds of pictures. You can dump the duplicates and the not so good photos and be left with some gems!
